The website, WalletHub.com, looked into the recent statistic that 75% of American adults are planning some type of road trip this summer, with some traveling more than 250 miles, and using a number of variables, determined America's best, and worst, states for those road trips.

According to Wallethub analyst, Chip Lupo, "Taking a summer road trip can be a very exciting way to experience a new place, but with the prices of gas, food and accommodations still impacted by inflation, you’ll want to be in a state that makes this type of vacation affordable. Safe roads are also key, and so is having plenty of worthwhile attractions to stop at along the road."

Wallethub.com used three key areas to assign a value in their comparisons of all fifty states including costs, safety and activities.

When the dust settled from all their calculations, Louisiana was actually near the top, finishing as the nation's fifth best behind Minnesota, New York, Ohio and Utah.

The worst state for a summer road trip, according to their findings, is Delaware, followed by Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and Montana.

Louisiana is actually the top performer when it comes to expenses for that trip, meaning we were the nation's cheapest.

Helping to achieve that "cheapest" factor, Louisiana was determined to have the fifth least expensive gasoline in the country, behind Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Louisiana did have one area in Wallethub's findings where it's obvious we could use some improvement and that was in safety.

In that category we finished 46th with only Delaware, Tennessee, South Carolina and New Mexico finishing worse than the Bayou State.
