Louisiana Lt. Governor Slams Mayor Over French Quarter Neglect
SHREVEPORT, LA - New Orleans is rolling out the red carpet for the Super Bowl. But the number one question people are asking is "is it safe." There was a mass shooting in the French Quarter on New Year's Eve and people are afraid.
But Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says that is changing. He thanks Governor Jeff Landry for putting State Troopers in the French Quarter because the Governor saw the importance of the French Quarter to the whole state.
Nungesser says
I saw crime getting better everyday. They were catching criminals in real time with these cameras. And when the City of New Orleans failed miserably in having those bollards up, the Governor stepped in and rented a bunch of bollards and put his team to make sure the Quarter is safe. And then he brings the Secretary of Homeland Security to New Orleans which made national news to show how safe the city is.
Nungesser says he's been trying to get the bollards fixed in Jackson Square for 3 years and he says that's why he's been so vocally angry at the Mayor for her lack of attention to the French Quarter for 8 years. Bollards are now in place all around the area to help keep the city safe.
Nungesser adds:
We've got a Mayor's election coming up next year and it couldn't happen soon enough. I've tried to work with the Mayor for 8 years and she just doesn't care. She gives a lot of lip service. Hopefully we can elect someone who cares. I've begged for 4 years to let me take over managing the French Quarter. I don't have to be in charge. Give me some authority to fix the streets, put up cameras. The Governor put up a bank of cameras in the Cabildo and they have facial recognition and they are catching people before they even commit crimes.

The Lt. Governor says giving New Orleans police the tools they need to help make the region safe is working. Nungesser says he would also like to talk with the next Mayor of New Orleans about letting him take over managing the French Quarter as a state asset to make it the best it can be.
KEEL News asked Nungesser why the Mayor of New Orleans doesn't care. He says she apparently has forgotten where she came from and the fact that she's traveled all over the world this past year when we had the biggest event coming to New Orleans. "It makes me angry and it should make everyone angry. And that's why her approval rating I think is 30%."
