Record Number of Guns Seized at Louisiana Airports

I’m not sure if it’s forgetfulness, or just ignorance, but more people tried to get guns through security at Louisiana airports in 2021 than in any previous year. The feds report the number of guns caught at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints reached record levels across Louisiana in 2021.

In fact, the numbers show the New Orleans Airport (MSY) coming in ninth in the nation. 119 guns were stopped at the checkpoint at the Louis Armstrong Airport.

TSA Spokesperson Sari Koshetz says

This dangerous violation of federal regulations could mean a trip to jail instead of a vacation. And an accidental discharge in the checkpoint could have tragic results.

Shreveport makes the list too. Agents caught 17 guns at the checkpoint at Shreveport Regional Airport last year. 7 guns were caught in Lafayette during 2021, 6 were stopped in Baton Rouge, 5 at Alexandria and 4 each in Monroe and Lake Charles.

During 2021 in Louisiana 162 passengers brought guns to the TSA checkpoints compared to 85 in 2020 and 91 in 2019.

If you are stopped with a gun at the TSA checkpoints, you could face a fine of close to $14,000. That penalty can be implemented whether or not you get arrested.

The TSA says if you must bring a gun on a flight, it must be in checked luggage and you have to declare it when you check in. You are also instructed to unload the gun and have it packed in a locked and hard-sided piece of luggage.
