Dr. Jim Henderson, University of Louisiana System President, talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about the sales tax, just passed by the special legislative session and the promises that the revenue will fund the state's TOPS scholarship program at 100%.

Henderson tells KEEL listeners that despite the new tax keeping Louisiana at or near the top nationally in highest sales taxes levied, "You can look at it from a number of perspectives. It is a beautiful day for families in Louisiana. 50,000 of them who were facing the prospects of writing $30 million in checks now know that the TOPS promise has been fulfilled. I think that's a great victory for all of us."

But the former BPCC chancellor also talks of the increasing cost of the program: "I think there's a ceiling on how much government should spend on anything. But when you start narrowing it down to programs, I don't know that there's a better investment of our resources than developing talent."
