UPDATE from 8:36 AM, Thursday January 9th 2024 -

DOTD now says they will no longer close I-49 in Shreveport. You can get the update from the state here.

With a massive winter storm heading into the Shreveport, Louisiana area, many are taking precautions. Not just residents, but schools and businesses. Measures are also being taken by government officials as well.

These include closures, delays, postponements, and cancellations.

One of the pre-emptive moves has been announced by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. They have announced they will be closing a major portion of I-49 through Shreveport area on Thursday. This closure doesn't have a specific time, but does include a specific location. Here is the statement from DOTD says:

"DOTD does plan to initiate the closure of the ‘urban’ section of I-49 in Shreveport mid-morning on Thursday, January 9th, following the morning rush hour traffic. This is the section from Bert Kouns Industrial Loop to I-20. This closure is being done as a precautionary safety measure ahead of forecast winter weather for our region."

Again, the trim frame of the closure remains ambiguous, but the closure will stretch from Bert Kouns to I-20. But their advisories aren't limited to just I-49. The DOTD is asking that "Drivers should avoid being on the roadways if travel is not absolutely necessary."

Additionally, the DOTD has put out advice for anyone who MUST travel during this winter storm. Their tips include:

  • Drive slowly and carefully.
  • Avoid driving while distracted.
  • Always allow for extra driving time.
  • Avoid using cruise control.
  • Reduce speeds when visibility is low.
  • Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Be on the lookout for DOTD crews and other emergency responders and their equipment.
  • Remember that it’s unlawful and unsafe to drive around a road closed barricade for any reason.

DOTD will be monitoring the situation around the Shreveport and Bossier City areas, and additional closures may be required during this winter storm.
