When I first realized the importance of having my own money, I started mowing yards in the neighborhood.  As a preteen youngster back in the early 70's, it was exciting to go and actually earn your own money.  As I got older, and my jobs became more steady, and the income became larger, my parents made me start paying for the things around their house I was consuming, like rent and even buying my own bed when I need a new one.  That might sound ridiculous by today's standards, but it was actually an excellent teaching tool.  They were teaching me financial responsibility... or trying to anyway.

This is the concept behind National Lemonade Day.  National Lemonade Day is a national effort to help teach the basics of entrepreneurial learning including Business Skills, Financial responsibility, Teamwork, and Goal Setting. Mentors guide participants through lessons via the My Lemonade Day app or with workbooks and teach participants business basics of planning, launching and operating a business. The kids learn valuable lessons including setting goals, making a plan, learning how to work the plan and achieving their dreams. Once a youth pays their investor back, they keep all the money they earn and are encouraged to spend some, save some, and share some of their profit.

The foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society – the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow.

And if there's one thing we certainly need these days, is more productive members of society.  If you would like to get involved and help, the local chapter is seeking mentors and volunteers. You can find more information by clicking: lemonadeday.org/shreveport-bossier-city
