Construction is underway at Chimp Haven in Keithville to be able to accommodate another 60 chimps from the New Iberia Research Center.

These laboratory chimps were recently released by the federal government to to live out their lives at the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary at Chimp Haven.

Boggs & Poole Contracting Group of Bossier City is the primary contractor for the expansion.  That same company was responsible for the original construction at Chimp Haven, beginning in 2003. so it's very familiar with the needs of the sanctuary.  The current project involves six playgrounds, indoor sleeping quarters, and a nearly 15,000-foot play yard.

The current project carries a $2.6-million pricetag.  It was made possible by $1-million contributions from animal activists Bob Barker and Anita Hirsh as well as other contributors.  However, another $2.2-million is still needed to support the continued care of the chimps and contributions of all sizes are welcome.  You can find out how to contribute at Chimp Haven's website:  www.chimphaven.org
