At the top of the list is Eunice which is known as the Prairie Cajun Capital of Louisiana. The cost of living in Eunice is about 9.8% below the state average and median home prices are as low as $50,000,

How Do Louisiana’s Largest Cities Stack Up for Affordability?

Here is how New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lafayette, Monroe, and Alexandria stack up relative to national averages:

  1. New Orleans
  • Cost of Living Trend: Roughly 14% higher than the national average.

New Orleans is a high-demand tourist destination and cultural center. You’ll pay close to the national average for groceries and utilities. But housing costs in New Orleans are about 50% higher than the national average.

  1. Baton Rouge
  • Cost of Living Trend: Roughly 10.7% to 11% lower than the national average.

Baton Rouge is the state capitol and housing prices are about 22% lower than the national average, while healthcare, groceries, and transportation are about average.

  1. Shreveport
  • Cost of-Living Trend: Roughly 5.8% lower than the national average.

The largest city in north Louisiana offers budget friendly housing with prices about 9% below the national average. Utilities, groceries and everyday services are on the low side, but not as low as you’ll find in surrounding rural communities.

  1. Lafayette
  • Cost of Living Trend: Roughly 13% lower than the national average.

This Acadiana community is packed with culture and great food. Housing costs are incredible. The numbers show housing in the Lafayette area are about 37% lower than the national average.

  • Cost of Living Trend: Roughly 8% to 9% lower than the national average.

Real estate costs in Monroe are also very affordable. Real estate and housing costs are about 27% cheaper than the U.S. average. Utility and transportation costs are also quite low compared to other cities in the nation.

  • Cost of Living Trend: Roughly 8% lower than the national average.

Alexandria is in the middle of the state and offers great prices on housing and utility expenses considerably lower than the national averages.
