At first, it might seem odd that there must be a warning like this.  But then, washing machine manufacturers have to put a label on machines saying “Do not put any person in this machine.” So, it makes sense that there has to be a warning now that says “Don’t kiss or snuggle your chickens.”  Do people really snuggle and kiss…chickens?

Why the Warning?

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) advises people against kissing and snuggling chickens.  The alert stems from a rise in salmonella cases, as more people are raising backyard chickens due to high egg prices. Chickens can carry salmonella bacteria, which can spread through direct contact between your mouth and a chicken.  It can also be transmitted by touching your mouth after touching a chicken.

But Do Chickens Even Like to Cuddle?

The opinions vary but at the very least, it’s debatable. While some claim their chickens are affectionate, others say they’re more like hamsters of the bird world, known for getting into all sorts of trouble. And while they may try to fly, their short, awkward flutters are more like assisted hopping than actual flight.

Safety Recommendations from the CDC

If you do raise chickens there are some things you can do to make sure you stay safe around your fowl feathered friends.

Wash your hands thoroughly-  Wash you hands immediately after touching chickens, fresh eggs, or anything in their environment.

Handle Eggs Safely- The same cleaning procedures apply when handling fresh eggs. They can also carry salmonella.

Avoid close contact-  Don't kiss, snuggle, or eat or drink around chickens.

Keep Food and Supplies Secure- Keep supplies like feed containers, tools, even the shoes you wear outside.
