Caddo Juvenile Court Judge Paul Young tell's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty that the parishes Juvenile Detention Center will face a "crisis" as early as July, when 17-year-olds are reclassified as juveniles.

In a recent email to 101.7 / 710 KEEL. the judge describes the mounting troubles at the Spring Street facility:

"I am contacting you regarding a crisis that will occur this summer at our Juvenile Detention Center. Already, it is the smallest in the South for any metropolitan area.  It runs at capacity now.  In July, we will start having jurisdiction over 17 year olds.  Monroe, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans will be able to handle this increase because their Centers are 50-!00% larger than ours."

Judge Young will appear before the Caddo Commission later this month to propose funding to double the current size of the 24 bed detention center, with special care taken to keep the older prisoners separate from the youngest ones.
