The Caddo Coroner's Office launched an investigation into the March 16, 2021 death of 31-year-old Casey Louis Simpson Jr, a Caddo Correctional Center inmate. At that time, preliminary autopsy results suggested natural causes, but a full autopsy and toxicology work was ordered. Now the Caddo Coroner's Office has released those results.

According to a release for the Coroner's Office, Simpson had been feeling sick four day prior to his death. The Coroner's Office says Simpson was evaluated at the Caddo Correction Center's medical facilities twice, but the results of those visits were not disclosed in the Coroner's release.

The Coroner's Office says Simpson was then discovered unresponsive in his cell just after 1pm on March 16th. First responders were called, and emergency resuscitation was started. Simpson was then transported to Willis-Knighton Medical Center on Greenwood Road where he was pronounced dead at 4:10pm that same day.

Inside the Coroner's release, they reveal their judgement on the cause of death, the release reads:

"After review of all records and autopsy results, the coroner concluded that Mr. Simpson died from diabetic ketoacidosis with acute renal failure secondary to new onset diabetes mellitus. It was also determined that Mr. Simpson had hypertensive cardiovascular disease, although this did not contribute to his death."

Though the Coroner's Office findings indicate the death to be of natural causes, the findings are being turned over to the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office for further evaluation. However that does not indicate that there is any form of criminal investigation taking place.
