Back-to-School Activities Going on Today in Bossier Parish

Bossier Parish kids head back to the classrooms next Monday, but there are several activities going on this afternoon in preparation for the 2016-17 school year.

Today is the teachers' first day back, and from 12:30-3:30 p.m., they'll be involved in various in-services and workshops. One of those is the Project Sew-B-It professional development workshop at Kerr Elementary.

It's being headed up by Jessica Minihan, an author and behavior analyst, who will guide educators through the steps of helping students with anxiety of oppositional behavior in the classroom. It's possible through the Project Sew-B-It grant, which was secured last year "to ensure the social and emotional well-being of students attending four schools where there is a high concentration of military-connected children." Kerr is one of those schools.

From 3-4:30 p.m., Bossier City and Parish first responders are invited to Bossier High School's open house to pick up a frozen treat from Happy Belly's. It's the Bearkats' way of saying thanks for the sacrifices they make each day while serving and protecting our community.

At 3 p.m., new Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith will help kick off the United Way of Northwest Louisiana's school supply drive. He'll be in front of one of the entrances at Wal-Mart on Airline Drive encouraging shoppers to help "Fill the Bus."
