7th Annual Super Safety Saturday Set for September
In just a few weeks, families will be able to get a ton of safety information and have fun at the same time, during Super Safety Saturday.
The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier puts on this free event each year to give kids a variety of health and safety tips in areas like fire and weather, biking, and sports and fitness.
I've taken my daughter to this event nearly every year since she was old enough to walk, and she always has a great time. Of course, there will be bounce houses -- that's a big plus, right? That's definitely one of my girl's favorite things.
The event also features plenty of games, a close up look at rescue vehicles, fitness classes and special appearances by kid-friendly characters. In past years, I've seen Louie the Lightning Bug, and I'm sure he'll be back again this time.
One of the most fun features is the Safety Pit Stops, where kids can have their cards punched after visiting Touch a Truck, the Health & Safety Fair, the Family Fun Zone, and Sheriff's Safety Town to earn a goody bag. The first 500 kids to finish all the pit stops will get one.
At Touch a Truck, vehicles of all kinds will be on display -- everything from police and fire vehicles to heavy equipment, and even a helicopter. During the Health & Safety Fair, families can get information and interactive experiences for fitness, sports, playtime and other activities.
The Family Fun Zone will feature carnival games, local entertainment and fitness classes. And in the Fire and Weather House, kids and parents alike can experience what it's like during an actual tornado, and learn what to do to keep everyone safe during severe weather.
Children are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets and pedal through the Safety Town neighborhood to practice the rules of the road. Last year, my daughter brought her roller skates, so that's an option for you, too. I'm sure scooters are also O.K.
A free child seat safety fitting will also be held on-site, courtesy of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office.
Everything is going on Saturday, September 24, from 9 a.m. until noon at Sheriff's Safety Town.
