Shots rang out at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado early this morning. It was during a midnight screening of  "The Dark Knight Rises".

At least 12 people are dead and dozens of others were wounded. The latest count has at least 38 other people wounded.  24-year-old James Holmes is in custody and police have recovered a gun after the shooting which happened at about 12:30 this morning.

Eyewitnesses say the man appeared at the front of the theater with a rifle, handgun and gas mask. That's when he threw a canister that released some kind of gas. He then turned to the crowd with the rifle and opened fire. People started running for the exits. One witness says the gunman then started walking up the stairs, firing at people. The theater was filled with children and we have learned that one of those killed was a 6-year-old.

Investigators are now interviewing friends and associates of the suspect to get a sense of the man's background.
