Take A Sneak Peak At New Shreveport YMCA

SHREVEPORT, LA - Southeast Shreveport has been waiting for many years for a brand new YMCA. More than a decade ago, the YMCA Board agreed to sell about 30 acres of  the Forbing property on Ellerbe Road to make way for the Kroger grocery store and the other retail shopping complex in that area.

Plans to Build Brand New YMCA in Southeast Shreveport Started a Decade Ago

But that sale did not include 20 acres that would be the home of a brand new YMCA to serve southeast Shreveport. Prior to this construction, the Forbing YMCA property was primarily used for summer camps. There was no gym or exercise complex.

What Does the New YMCA Have?

This new YMCA will have a state of the art gym capable of hosting basketball, volleyball, pickleball and many other sports. It will also be used to host community events.

The YMCA also has a full workout area on the 2nd floor with state of the art cardio equipment and a full cross fit gym area. There are also 2 private studios for hosting a variety of workout classes.

The outdoor pool is unlike anything else in our community. It will be heated year round to 78 degrees and will be open all year. The pool has an area for swimming laps and an area for the family which will include swim lessons and water aerobics classes.

The outside of the property also has a running track that runs alongside a small picturesque pond on the grounds.

How Long Has Construction at YMCA in Shreveport Been Going On?

YMCA leaders broke ground on this complex back in October of 2021. There have been numerous delays in getting supplies here because of the Covid Pandemic. The goal was to open the doors in the fall of 2023, but that has been delayed until now.

When Will the New Shreveport YMCA Open?

The Grand Opening of the Lash Family YMCA is set for Saturday January 27 at 10am. The public is invited to drop by and see the facility as the doors swing open. This new complex is expected to have a $4 million dollar economic impact on Shreveport in the first year of operation.

What Programs Will Be Offered at the New YMCA in Shreveport?

Fitness classes of all kinds will be on the schedule. There will also be swim lessons, water aerobics, basketball, pickleball, volleyball and so much more. The Y will also host summer camps for youngsters and special sessions for children during school breaks.

There will also be classes tailored to older adults who want to stay active.
