The director of Taylor Swift's latest music video set struck back at mounting criticism and charges of racism because of the "mini-film's" scarcity of black people.

Swift's "Wildest Dreams," which is set in Africa, has been viewed more than 15 million times since its release earlier this week.

"Thank you, Taylor Swift, for proving once again that African stereotypes are safe atop the pinnacle of American pop culture," wrote Matt Carotenuto, an African studies at a New York university and guest columnist for salon.com.

Director Joseph Kahn  responded to the criticism, saying, "There is no political agenda in the video. Our only goal was to tell a tragic love story in classic Hollywood iconography,"

Swift, who has 62 million Twitter followers and whose "1989" album has sold more than 8 million copies, has not responded.
