Shreveport Police Officer Thomas LaValley was remembered during pregame ceremonies at Northwestern State University, where LaValley graduated in 2007.

His family was presented with the Nth Degree, which is given to those "whose professional responsibilities in making the world a better place are carried out to the Nth Degree." LaValley’s was presented in recognition of his dedication to public safety and valor in the line of duty.

A scholarship was also established in his name. The Officer Thomas LaValley Memorial Scholarship came about thanks to numerous donations from law enforcement agencies and associations, and LaValley's former colleagues throughout northwest Louisiana.

Captain Danny Dison, director of security for Bossier Parish Schools and a retired Bossier City police chief, said he didn't know Officer LaValley personally, but felt moved to honor his memory.

"It doesn't matter whether the officer is a friend or not," Dison said in an NSU news release. "We all wear the same badge and are all in the same brotherhood and sisterhood."

The scholarship will be awarded to students from Caddo, Bossier and Ascension Parishes who are majoring in criminal justice, with special preference to the sons and daughters of fallen officers. Visit northwesternalumni.com/lavalley if you'd like to donate to the scholarship fund.

Officer LaValley was killed August 5 while responding to a domestic disturbance in Shreveport's Queensborough area. His alleged killer, 27-year-old Grover Cannon, faces first degree murder. He's expected to be arraigned September 18.
