NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say a 42-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday night.

Investigators tell The Times-Picayune witnesses were leaving a bar about 8:30 p.m. when a man sitting on nearby steps started firing a gun at them.

Lester Adams, of Chalmette, was hit by more than one bullet during the attack, and he was taken to Interim LSU Public Hospital in life-threatening condition. John Gagliano, the New Orleans coroner's chief investigator, says Adams died at the hospital from his wounds about 3:50 a.m. Monday.
