Following a hearing Tuesday, Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator has decided to not "rollover" a property tax millage that would have brought an additional $440,000 to the sheriff's department this year. Prator described the decision to make due with less as "trying to stay true to my conservative principles."

Prator told 101.7 / 710 KEEL listeners that the belt-tightening will be nothing new for his department, explaining to Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty that, "if you come to my office and you want some water...you get tap water."

The Sheriff also challenged other Parish governmental departments to cut costs: "“One thing was clear at today’s hearing. Everyone is hurting. So we are going to tighten our belts more than ever before and figure out a way to maintain our services without going back to taxpayers."
