The Bossier City Police Department and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission are holding an enforcement campaign this month focused at saving the lives of pickup truck drivers and their passengers.

From April 24-30, officers will take part in the statewide campaign "Buckle Up in Your Truck" by stepping up enforcement of Louisiana's seat belt laws. The effort is designed to convince pickup truck occupants to protect themselves from injuries and death by wearing their safety belts regularly.

Police say pickup drivers and passengers can often get a false sense of security because their vehicles are larger than many others, so they often choose not to buckle up.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a substantial number of traffic deaths involving pickups happen in rollover crashes and seat belt use can reduce the risk by up to 80%.

A grant from the LHSC will cover the cost of overtime associated with additional patrols during the campaign.
