A Bossier City Fire Department paramedic is being honored for his role in saving the life of a young boy.

The Louisiana Bureau of Emergency Medical Services will present its 'Lights and Siren' award to Blair Bockhaus at a ceremony tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the department on Benton Road.

Bockhaus is an 11-year veteran of the fire department, and is receiving the award for an EMS run he made in 2011 that saved the life of then-11-year-old Jace Turner.

Jace's jugular vein was severed in a freak accident, which resulted in Jace losing a large amount of blood. According to a news release, a patient with that type of injury would normally be taken to the trauma center at University Health in Shreveport. But Bockhaus made the call to have Jace first taken to the nearest hospital -- Willis Knighton-Pierremont.

Doctors at WK-P were able to replenish Jace's blood and stabilize his condition. Afterward, Bockhaus and his crew took Jace to University Health for further treatment. Doctors credit Bockhaus' decision with saving Jace's life.

Jace is now 15, and plans to attend tomorrow's award ceremony along with members of his family.
