Shreveport-Bossier makes it a point to celebrate the members of our military all year long, but Memorial Day, which falls this year on May 27, is the day we go above and beyond — not unlike our veterans when it comes to protecting us and defending our freedom.

Here are a few ideas, suggestions and local events for celebrating Memorial Day from the team at 710 KEEL.

1

Thank a Veteran

Shaking a veteran's hand and thanking them for all they've done to keep you safe is a simple, yet powerful show of appreciation.

2

Donate

Several non-profit groups offer options for folks looking to make a donation -- monetary or otherwise -- to servicemen and women. The Wounded Warrior Project is one such group. You can also donate cars to veterans though VetsVehicles.

3

See Motivational Speaker Clebe McClary

On Sunday at 10:30 a.m., Clebe McClary will speak at Rose Park Baptist Church's "I Love America Sunday" program. McClary suffered devastating injuries in Vietnam, but overcame them to become a celebrated motivational speaker and author.

4

Check Out Mudbug Madness

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Mudbug Madness festival in Shreveport, and we have no doubt plenty of soldiers from Barksdale Air Force Base will be in attendance alongside us all for some good food and great live music.

5

Exercise Your Freedoms

Soldiers fight and die to protect our freedoms, so making sure we exercise them is the ultimate way to honor their sacrifices -- whether that's writing a politician, starting a personal blog or being part in a peaceful protest.

6

Hillcrest Cemetery

Hillcrest Cemetery in haughton at 9 a.m., Ron Chatelain will be the guest speaker. Ron is Louisiana's most decorated veteran. He is a Vietnam Veterans and is the recipient of five Purple Hearts and the nation's second highest medal, The Distinguished Service Cross.

9

Northwest Veterans Cemetery

The Northwest Veterans Cemetery in Keithville will have their ceremony at 11:45am at American Legion Post 14, on Cross Lake.

Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport
