Investigators are working a shooting at a business in Shreveport’s Eden Gardens neighborhood that left a local man fighting for his life and his alleged assailant behind bars.

At approximately 2:43 p.m. on August 11, 2011, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the G-Style Barbershop in the 600 block of East 70th Street relative to a shooting. Upon arrival there officers discovered 28 year old Lavoriss Powell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, at least one of which was to the torso. Powell was subsequently transported to LSUHSC by the Shreveport Fire Department with what have been described as life-threatening injuries.

Responding patrol officers were able, based on preliminary statements from witnesses at the scene, to develop a possible suspect and as they went to locate the man, they learned he was simultaneously calling police dispatchers wanting to surrender himself to authorities. Patrolmen took that man, identified as 33 year old Carlos M. Smith, into custody moments later on nearby Altus Street. Smith was transported to the Shreveport Police Complex where he was interviewed by detectives. Smith, of the 7600 block of Altus Loop in Shreveport, is being booked into the Shreveport City Jail at this time on one count of attempted second degree murder. His mugshot is not immediately available as the booking procedure has not yet been completed.

Detectives have learned that the Powell and Smith, who are known to each other, had been involved in an ongoing feud that apparently led to a confrontation this afternoon between the two men and culminated with the suspect shooting the victim several times.
