Police have now released the name of the child killed in the Highland neighborhood,
Five year old Mackenzie Beightol was killed while riding her bike.

At approximately 3:11 p.m. on December 29, 2011, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Robinson Place relative to major crash.  Upon arrival there, officers discovered that a GMC pick-up truck operated by 34 year old Kevin Currey of Shreveport was backing out of a driveway on Robinson Place when the vehicle struck a five year old female who was riding a bicycle in that block. The little girl was transported to LSUHSC by the Shreveport Fire Department where she was later pronounced deceased. Currey voluntarily accompanied investigators to the Shreveport Police Complex to undergo mandatory testing and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.

Crash investigators responded to the scene and they are working at this hour to determine exactly what caused this crash. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered Currey had three local traffic warrants outstanding for his arrest and he was subsequently booked into the Shreveport City Jail on those warrants for general speed, no proof of insurance, and expired inspection sticker. The warrants are not related to this crash.
