Why Were Military Tents Being Set Up In Shreveport?
With concerns over the coronavirus outbreak in our area, photos of military tents being set up in Shreveport created a big stir on social media this afternoon. Multiple pictures from the Clyde Fant area were posted, with a lot of suggestions about the possible purposes of tents like this.
But we now have an answer.
This post went up on the Caddo Parish Republican Party Facebook page, explaining what has happening today. Here's what the post said:
"To all Caddo Parish residents:
There are lots of rumors that have been posted on social media today, including this photo of a tent being erected on Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport. Senator Barrow Peacock went directly to investigate and spoke with the soldiers preparing the tent and they indicated to him they were erecting the tent for training purposes, only. Senator Peacock also spoke with General Waddell, and says "he has confirmed that it was, in fact, training for a Fort Humbug unit that is scheduled to be deployed in November."
There have also been posts about possible mass quarantining in Louisiana. After contacting Senator Barry Milligan, chairman of the State Senate Homeland Security Committee, he advised that "none of the GOHSEP (Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness) meetings I’ve attended, including the one today at 1:30 p.m., and in my speaking with state level and Orleans Parish level officials today, there are no plans at this time for a mandatory quarantine." He added that, "if the cases in Orleans Parish continue to escalate, that Parish may seek that option." He will be posting an update on social media tomorrow (Monday), after the 1:00 p.m. GOHSEP meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
We wanted everyone to have the latest information, with regards to the rumors that have been posted on social media since most everyone's anxiety level is already high.
And thank you to both our local and state elected officials for the work they are doing during this difficult situation, and unprecedented in modern time."
