Which States Are Losing the Most Residents?
An annual study shows people are moving to the south in the United States in a pretty big way.
United Van Lines does a migration study every year and it shows Americans are migrating to the west and the south.
Here's the list of the top inbound states during 2020:
- Idaho
- South Carolina
- Oregon
- South Dakota
- Arizona
- North Carolina
- Tennessee
- Alabama
- Florida
- Arkansas
Here's the list of the top outbound states for the year:
- New Jersey
- New York
- Illinois
- Connecticut
- California
- Kansas
- North Dakota
- Massachusetts
- Ohio
- Maryland
For Louisiana, the report shows we have total inbound traffic of 47.3% with outbound traffic of 52.7%.
Why are people leaving Louisiana? 72% report they leave for a job in another state. Nearly 12% leave to be closer to family members in other states. Another 9% leave Louisiana when they retire. 57% of the outbound traffic involves folks between the ages of 18 and 44.
Another stat that is disturbing in this report is that 70% of the outbound traffic from Louisiana makes more than $100,000 dollars a year. But the numbers also show 70% of our inbound traffic makes more than $100,000 dollars, so that kind of balances out a bit.
During the pandemic of 2020, several large cities saw big numbers of folks leaving. New York City (72%), Newark (72%) and Chicago (69%), experienced greater outbound migration, while the report says lower-density cities like Wilmington, North Carolina (79%) and Boise, Idaho (75%) saw high levels of inbound moves.
