If you're a Jif Peanut Butter lover, you've undoubtedly noticed you can't find Jif Peanut Butter on local shelves.  J.M. Smucker, the parent company of Jif Peanut Butter issued a voluntary recall of Jif back in May, due to a salmonella outbreak at their Lexington, Kentucky production plant.  The recall affected several states, including Louisiana.

But, unfortunately for the Smucker company, the recall has expanded to include nearly 50 peanut butter products, which also affects other companies that purchase and use these products as well.  This means that this recall could end up costing the J.M. Smucker company upwards of $125 million dollars.

The Jif peanut butter brand was created in 1958.  You probaly remember the marketing slogan from the 60's... "Choosy Moms Choose Jif."  Yes, that goes all the way back to the 60's.

Here are some interesting facts about Jif, and peanut butter in general, you might not be aware of.

  • Even though it's believed the Incas were grinding peanuts into a paste hundreds of years ago, peanut butter, as we know it today, was introduced to the world at the St. Louis World's Fair back in 1904
  • The Jif manufacturing plant in Lexington, Kentucky is the largest producer of peanut butter in the world.
  • The peanut is actually not a nut at all, but rather a legume, belonging to the pea family
  • Americans anually consume over 270 million pounds of Jif... just Jif... that's not even counting Skippy, Peter Pan, and the countless other brands of peanut butter.

The good news for Jif lovers across the country is they hope to be back on the shelves soon.  Jif officials told The Lexington-Herald Leader that the Lexington plant recently began taking orders from their customers again.

“We have resumed accepting orders from our retail customers at both our Lexington and Memphis facilities and expect products to be back on shelves shortly. The health and safety of our consumers remains our top priority and we are confident our safety and quality processes support our ability to continue to deliver on this commitment,”
