Doorknobs have been a key component of doors for many years, but Vancouver says they are not allowed in the Canadian city.

Despite the ban, residents who have doorknobs are not required to change them out.

The move is meant to make it easier for the elderly and those with poor dexterity to open doors.  Doorknobs are generally difficult to open because it requires the user to grasp and twist.  That maneuver is often difficult for the elderly.

The alternative is a door lever, a style of hardware often found on doors in commercial buildings or in many newer homes.  The lever is easier to use to open and close doors with.

The ban takes effect in March 2014.
