The media giant hopes to outbid Disney for the rights to the historic movie and television studios.

As Star Wars Rebels ends, Disney is taking the TV franchise lightyears ahead. The mind behind Disney streaming’s live-action Star Wars TV series is none other than Jon Favreau, who will write and produce.

In recent weeks, Disney has effectively blacklisted the Los Angeles Times following a compelling three-part story on the corporation’s business dealings in Anaheim. The corporation is retaliating by refusing to screen upcoming films for LA Times press, which may be setting a dangerous precedent — one that’s inspired four separate critics groups to voice their support for the LA Times by boycotting Disney and disqualifying their films from awards eligibility. While Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing to unleash Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters on December 15, some theater owners aren’t feeling the Force — specifically, the demands Disney has in place for screenings and their cut of the profits. Although most moviegoers in larger markets with bigger theaters won’t have to worry about missing out on the next chapter in the Star Wars saga, fans in smaller cities might get burned.

A big part of every D23 convention is the Disney Legends Awards, where the company honors its own, celebrating artists and executives who have made major contributions to the Walt Disney Company. This year’s honorees include Oprah Winfrey, Mark Hamill, and the late Carrie Fisher. The Marvel portion of the event honored two of the comics company’s most important creators: Writer and editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Kirby passed away in 1994, so his son accepted his award on his behalf, but Stan “The Man” was on hand to accept his Disney Legends honor. He gave a great speech, and a very emotional one as well.
