I have griped about this more than I care to admit, but it's a serious pet peeve. If you pay attention when you are driving around at night, you will notice street lights out all over Shreveport.

This has been an ongoing problem for more than 10 years. I really don't know what the problem is, but we need to try to find a solution. I do understand Shreveport is responsible for some of the lights, Swepco is responsible for some of the lights.

The City of Shreveport is responsible for all lights on I-20, I-220, 3132, Cross Lake Bridge, Jewella Overpass, half of Texas Street Bridge and one span of Shreveport Barksdale Bridge. DOTD requires notification and a permit to close lanes prior to working on lights on these roadways.

But we are just not doing a good job keeping the lights on. How can we expect to attract new industry and jobs when we can't change the light bulbs? I know that sounds simplistic and there may be a bigger problem that no one is telling me about. I was told for a former city leader that rats often chew through the lines on the lights for I-20 near the Fairgrounds. I guess that could be a problem in other areas too.

Are we the only city with this issue? I get texts and emails regularly from folks who travel a bunch. They tell me they drive on I-20 through Jackson, Mississippi, Birmingham, Alabama and even Monroe, Louisiana and the towns are all lit up. But when they get back to Shreveport, it's dark on the highway.

I hope we can find a solution. To be honest, I am very tired of griping about it and sending emails to city leaders every six months about lights. We have so many other more important problems. But you have to be good at the little things to have a chance of being good at the big things.

We asked Shreveport Councilwoman LeVette Fuller to chime in on this problem to see what we have to do to get it fixed.

Again, I will email these videos to the Mayor and the Public Works Director to let them know of the problem. We'll see how long it takes to get the lights fixed.
