You will also hear folks talk with a politeness that you just don’t hear in many parts of the country. We say "ma'am" and "sir" out of respect. And let’s not forget the very common "bless your heart". This has a slew of meanings ranging from “you’re not the brightest bulb” to “I really feel sorry for you.” I bet I hear this Southern phrase at least once a day.
