Shreveport’s Second Dog Park: Where Will It Be and What Will It Cost?
How many folks around the area know that Shreveport has a second dog park in the works? Given the long, drawn out fight - including court rulings - attached to Shreveport's Dog Park #1 on East Stoner near the boat launch, the peaceful planning of Dog Park #2 is certainly welcomed by all involved.
According to the Shreveport Dog Park Alliance, the official groundbreaking for Dog Park #2, originally scheduled for Friday, February 4, has been postponed because of the weather. A new date is expected to be set early next week.
The new facility, to be located inside Southern Hills Park in southwest Shreveport, is being built with support from the Southern Hills Business Association. Funding, says Shreveport Dog Park Alliance Director Cynthia Keith, is coming from both the City of Shreveport and added funding from the state. The major source of park funding will come from a "one time grant from the city," as Keith describes it, totaling about $80,000.
The planning for Dog Park #2, began almost two years ago in the city's Southern Hills area with the circulation of a petition, but the pandemic delayed the process for more than another year.
Keith says she is hesitant to mention a completion date for the acre-and-a-half park, due to the COVID situation, weather, and supply chain issues that could cause delays in getting the needed materials.
