SHREVEPORT, LA - Shreveport drivers are struggling with the new yellow flashing traffic lights that are popping up all around town. You've probably seen them in the left turn lanes.

I saw a post on social media that says "that blinking left arrow has some of my fellow Shreveporters in a chokehold." This is so true. Some people have no idea how to handle that yellow blinking light.

But people don't know what to do. Can they go? Do they have to yield? Folks are confused. Some people think that yellow flashing light is going to turn red so they stop and don't turn.

What Does Louisiana Law Say about Yellow Flashing Lights?

Drivers are permitted to turn left at a flashing yellow arrow, but only after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. That blinking yellow light does not give you the right-of-way. It gives you the ok to turn if there is no oncoming traffic.

Just remember, in Louisiana, a flashing yellow arrow means "caution." It does not mean "go."

You should always yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. You also have to yield to any oncoming vehicles. Be sure to consider the other drivers speed and distance before making your move.

And only turn into the intersection when it's completely safe to do so.

Why Are the Flashing Yellow Turn Arrows Used?

These flashing yellow lights are used to help enhance safety at the intersections.
The lights let drivers know you can turn, but you should make that move only if you believe it is safe to turn.

The city of Shreveport has been installing these new lights with the yellow flashing lights at intersections all around the city. But they are not yet at every intersection. I assume they are moving in that direction.
