SHREVEPORT, LA - Things came to a screeching halt in downtown Shreveport when a freight train derailed Monday afternoon, causing significant disruption and prompting a large emergency response.

This derailment happened just after 1pm in the 800 block of Clyde Fant Parkway at Lake Street, behind the Sci-Port Discovery Center. According to the Shreveport Fire Department, more than 10 train cars left the rails.

Shreveport firefighters, police officers and emergency crews have been on the scene most of the afternoon working to secure the area and assess the damage. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

Authorities report no injuries at this time. Early reports indicate there is no significant impact on traffic in the surrounding area.

The tracks are owned by Union Pacific and this is a Union Pacific train that derailed.

There have been no reports that any of the contents of the train cars has leaked or spilled in the area.

 

It is expected to take several hours for the train cars to be flipped back over and the entire mess cleaned up.

The Shreveport Fire Department issued this information:

On Monday, April 14, 2025, at 1:14 PM, the Shreveport Fire Department (SFD) received a 911 call reporting a derailment involving a Union Pacific train near Lake Street and Clyde Fant Parkway, behind Sci-Port Discovery Center. The call was placed by a witness standing in a nearby parking lot. A total of seven (7) units from the SFD responded, with the first unit arriving six (6) minutes after dispatch. Once on scene, firefighters were able to confirm that eleven (11) train cars were derailed from the track and all eleven were empty. No hazardous materials were spilled or released. The total length of the train was approximately 101 cars. Additionally, no disruption to traffic occurred. No injuries to Union Pacific employees, firefighters, or the public were reported. The cause of the derailment is under investigation by Union Pacific.
