SPD said that coming up on Tuesday (3/25/25) they will be out in the southwest area of the city checking for general safety and make sure people are wearing their seatbelts.

Police say that the checkpoint is to make sure that both drivers and passengers are following all the car safety laws. The focus will be on seatbelts, but SPD will be checking for other issues with vehicles, drivers, and occupants.

SPD had this to say:

"As we continue to see a rise in serious and fatal crashes in our area, our officers will continue to work diligently to reduce the number of deaths and severe injuries involving unrestrained motorists. The construction and operation of this checkpoint will follow the guidelines outlined in the Louisiana State Police Roadside Safety Checkpoint Manual.

This enforcement effort is funded by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission’s highway safety grant, and we encourage all motorists to buckle up and drive safely."
