Selective Demolition Kicks Off at the Old Police Headquarters
Construction is getting ready to kick into high gear at the old Shreveport Police Headquarters at 1234 Texas Street. Fencing has gone up around the property and some of the demolition work will be the first step. KEEL News asked SPAR Director Shelly Ragle some questions about this project.
When Will Demolition Work Start
Ragle says "they are currently doing selective demolition on items that can be salvaged. The demolition work will not look like a normal “go in and wreck ‘em project”, since we are salvaging much of the building and its elements for reuse." Ragle says the only part of the building that will actually be torn down is the former courts section which is on the north side of the property.
The contractor is now in the building salvaging many items that can be re-used.

What Is the Time Frame for the Demolition?
Ragle tells us they have not gotten the final project schedule. Once that is set in stone, the city will then have a timeline for the entire project
When Will the New Construction Begin?
City officials say the work has started if you consider the selective demolition. The fencing has been put up around the property and some of the work is beginning. City court officials have sent out advisory about parking for folks who have business with the court which is right next door.
The Shreveport City Court will remain open during the construction phases at the Shreveport Police Department and the SporTran facilities. However, parking will be limited. Visitors should use the parking lot located at the corner of Texas Avenue and Stoner Avenue.

How Long Will the Construction Last?
Ragle says the contract allows for 800 days. But she adds the contractor is hoping to finish much sooner. This new headquarters building was approved by voters in the 2021 bond issue. Hand Construction won the bid at just over $22 million.
