I'm ashamed to even say what we pay for dog food in our house.  But, and if you have pets, particularly dogs, you understand, a good dog food can make a huge difference in the overall health and well-being of your furry family member.

Pet food sales is one segment of the economy that actually went up during the pandemic. According to the website petfoodindustry.com,

The pet food market has a well-deserved reputation for being recession resistant and even, since 2020, pandemic resistant. For example, pet food and treat sales in the U.S. increased 15% in 2020 and another 15% in 2021, according to Packaged Facts.

There have been recent reports of two confirmed cases of dogs becoming sick from too much Vitamin D in a particular formula of Purina dog food.  This has led to a recall of Purina's Pro Plan specialty blend EL Elemental dog food according to Louisiana Ag Commissioner Mike Strain.

“Vitamin D is essential for dogs, however, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health issues, depending on how much Vitamin D and the length of exposure,” said Strain.

EL Elemental is a prescription formula for dogs only available through veterinary clinics or select retailers. Strain said execessive levels of Vitamin D can cause several symptoms to watch out for, including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling.

EL Elemental dog food is usually prescribed for dogs with allergies, stomach problems, and or skin allergies.  If you have this version, Strain says to stop feeding the recalled food immediately.

“Throw it away, put it into your garbage can or dumpster. Don’t put it where any other animal can get it,” said Strain.
