Shreveport is #1 on This National List and It’s Very Impressive
So, you're seriously looking at retirement in the not-too-distant future, and you starting to, as the cliche goes, get all your ducks in a row. Obviously, the most important of these is your financial situation, as it's necessary to plan for what may be a couple or three decades.
What's the Study and Why is Shreveport #1?
And according to a new GOBankingRates study, one of the keys to financial security in retirement is, not surprisingly, where one resides. And guess what! If you're a soon-to-be retiree and you live in Shreveport or the ArkLaTex, you already have one leg up, because that same study ranks Shreveport as the number one city in the USA for retirees living on $2,000 a month.
And the Cities Shreveport Beats Includes...
The top ten metropolitan areas for retirees on a budget include spots like Oklahoma City (housing is on the cheaper side, at an average of $830 a month), Corpus Christi (15% of the population is 65 or older), Columbus, Ohio (healthcare costs are on the lower end) and Tucson, Arizona (healthcare costs are the cheapest on the list and 20% of the population is 65 or older).
But, as they say in sports, there's only one number one and Shreveport, Louisiana is it.
Shreveport Tops the List and Here's Why
Here's what the study says about Shreveport as the nation's top spot for retirees on a budget:
"With average monthly expenditures only $1,498.65 and a monthly average of $374.77 for groceries, Shreveport are the most affordable on the list. Additionally, housing in the city is the second-lowest, averaging $730 per month."
In the United States, the average cost of monthly expenditures for people 65 and older is $1,982.25 and the Shreveport average is nearly $500 below that. So local retirees or soon-to-be retired folks, maybe it's not time to pack up and head for sunny wherever. According to one study, for folks like you, the future around here is pretty bright, too.
