A Shreveport man has been found guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Caddo District Court following a 2022 shooting.

Nine witnesses testified in Caddo Court to prove that 41 year-old Ernie Lynn Campbell shot and killed 25 year-old Regmond Mitchell back in February of 2022. Mitchell had driven a passenger to a home on Barbara Avenue when Campbell approached the car and stood by the driver's side door.

After a brief exchange, witnesses said that Mitchell turned his head away from Campbell, who then fired the gun once, killing Mitchell. The autopsy showed that the bullet's path proved that Mitchell was not facing Campbell at the time of the shooting.

Police were able to recover two guns in Mitchell's car, to which Campbell was arguing self-defense in the shooting. This claim was rejected by the jury.

It took the jury less than an hour to get a unanimous guilty-as-charged verdict to the Judge.

When Campbell returns to court for sentencing in November, he faces a mandatory life sentence, to be served at hard labor without probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

From the Caddo DA:

"Campbell was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Jason Waltman and Stephen Folk-Cruthirds. He was represented by Eric Johnson and Rachel Bays.

The case was docket No. 387705."
