Last New Orleans Jail Escapee Captured After Months on the Run
After several months on the run, the final remaining escapee from the New Orleans jail is back in custody. 28-year-old Derrick Groves was part of a group of New Orleans inmates that escaped jail earlier this year. He was captured after a standoff with Atlanta police.
How Did the Arrest Happen?
This was a coordinated effort involving several agencies including the FBI and Homeland Security. Groves was caught on Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia after a brief stand-off. Groves was one of ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison on May 16, 2025, prompting a multi-agency manhunt.
Statement from New Orleans Officials:
This arrest was the result of "tireless efforts of multiple federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that the final escapee was found and taken into custody."

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says
Tonight, I stood united with Louisiana State Police, along with our State, local, and federal partners to detail the arrest of Derrick Groves. Groves was the most violent of all the inmates who escaped the Orleans Justice Center back in May, with at least four bodies to his name.
Murrell Adds:
He will spend the rest of his life in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Anyone who may have helped him will also be arrested and prosecuted. A lot of people will sleep much better tonight knowing this convicted murderer is finally back in custody.
