Measles Outbreak: State-by-State Breakdown, 2025 Updates
SHREVEPORT, LA - You have probably heard some concerns about a resurgence of measles cases. It is happening even though we thought this old-school childhood illness was long gone.
According to the CDC's latest numbers, as of the end of February, we've seen a pretty significant uptick in measles cases. So far there have been more than 150 cases across the U.S. Texas has been hard hit. But there have also been cases reported in eight other states:
Alaska, California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City and Rhode Island all have cases. Last year there was a total of 285 cases for the whole year, so we are trending toward a much higher number.
The CDC says more than 90% of these cases are tied to outbreaks. That means they are spreading within specific communities. So far this year, there have been three outbreaks and one child in Texas has died as a result of measles.
What Group Is Most Impacted by the Measles?
Young people are most at risk. 34% of the current cases are among children under age 5. A whopping 48% of the cases are among people between 5 and 19 years old. Of these cases, about 20% of them have required hospitalization. 29% of infected children under age 5 had to go to the hospital.
Is Measles a Threat in Louisiana?
There is concern that we could see the measles in Louisiana since there are dozens of cases in our neighboring state of Texas. And that concern rises as we move into spring break next week with many youngsters traveling out of town for the break.
Experts say 95% of those infected were either not vaccinated for measles or did not know their vaccination status. Doctors urge parents to make sure your children are vaccinated.
