Mayor’s Cup Soccer Games Set For Monday

Soccer fans might want to check out this big event.  LSUS and Centenary Soccer programs team up for the Mayor’s Cup to benefit the March of Dimes.

LSU Shreveport and Centenary Soccer have teamed up to join forces in providing Shreveport with a cross-town collegiate soccer contest referred to as the Mayor’s Cup that will benefit March of Dimes. The 1st ever game is slated to begin Monday, Sept. 12 at Centenary’s Mayo Field.  The women’s game will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m.  “This will be a great event for our community to get involved and come watch two great soccer matches,” said LSUS head soccer coach Mike Aguilar. “In my nearly twenty years of involvement with Centenary Soccer, this is the first "cross-town" collegiate game for the Centenary men’s soccer program, here in Shreveport,” said head men’s soccer coach David Orr.  2011 will mark the beginning of an annual tradition between Centenary and LSUS Soccer. The two teams will alternate locations of competition each year with Centenary hosting the inaugural Cup. The winners of both the women’s and men’s game will return to their institutions with a “Mayor’s Cup” trophy signifying the year’s victory.  This year’s doubleheader matchup will benefit Shreveport’s March of Dimes. All proceeds made during the event will report directly to Shreveport’s local chapter.  With no admission charge, fans and members of the Shreveport community are encouraged to participate and help support March of Dimes by giving donations, purchasing t-shirts and hamburgers and hotdogs off the grill from the cookout.  “When we initially scheduled the match between Centenary and LSU Shreveport last Fall, Gent's soccer players expressed a desire to make this game meaningful to those in the community,” said Orr. Following each contest, there will be a special presentation given to the winner of the Cup.  March of Dimes is a national non-profit organization that helps to improve the health of moms and babies. The March of Dimes provides mothers, pregnant women and women of childbearing age with educational resources on baby health, pregnancy, preconception and new motherhood, as well as supplying information and support to families affected by prematurity, birth defects, or other infant health problems.
