Louisiana Residents Are Among Worst for Swearing
SHREVEPORT, LA – If you bump your knee into the sharp corner of a table, you might spew a foul word or two. The same might happen if you drop a hammer on your toe. That’s understandable. But these days, folks are putting curse words into everyday sentences. It’s happening all the time.
I know I have heard swear words coming from diners out at restaurants. It’s part of the regular conversation these days. But why? I’m not sure what changed. But we are sure using foul language a lot more.
In fact a new study puts Louisiana near the top in the nation for potty mouthed residents.
This survey from WordTips reveals people in Maryland curse the most in the United States. But Louisiana is a close 2nd.
What Part of Louisiana Curses the Worst?
The Bayou State is led by Baton Rouge on the salty mouth scale. Baton Rouge ranks as the second foul-mouthed city in the country in the study, and New Orleans is 8th on the list.
WordTips analyzed more than 1.7 million Tweets that were geotagged by location. The site checked those Tweets for foul language to develop this chart.
It’s no surprise that the U.S. is ranked number one for most potty-mouthed country, followed by the UK and Australia.

- The U.S. ranks number one as the country that swears the most, with 41.6 tweets per 1,000 featuring curse words.
- The UK comes in second place (with 28.6 posts including swear words per 1,000 analyzed), followed by other English-speaking countries such as Australia (26.6), New Zealand (25.2) and Canada (24.6).
Maryland, Louisiana and Georgia are the states that swear the most. South Dakota is the state that swears the least.
