NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A south Louisiana officer injured in a shooting will soon receive a new kidney, thanks to a donation from a St. Tammany Parish deputy.

Sheriff Randy Smith says Deputy Robert Ardeneaux Jr. is scheduled for surgery Monday to conduct the transplant.

Ardeneaux's kidney is going to Jason Triche, a St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's deputy who has struggled with health issues since a 2012 shooting that claimed the lives of two other officers.

The sheriff says both of Triche's kidneys have failed.

Smith says Ardeneaux is no relation to Triche, but found out he was a match and wanted to donate a kidney to his "brother in blue."
