There is nothing quite like a local success story to make you smile, and the newly crowned champion of Taco Wars 2026 has a journey that will absolutely inspire you.

If you’ve driven down Airline Drive lately, you might have noticed the sign for Taqueria La Reina Del Sur.

Walk through the doors, and the very first thing you’ll see is a warm, smiling face greeting you. That belongs to the proud owner, Martha Anchondo, a woman who is currently holding the bragging rights for the best tacos in town, but whose path to the top started in the most humble way imaginable.

Sixteen years ago, Martha was driving down the road when she spotted a local construction site. Right then and there, a spark of inspiration hit her. She boldly approached the foreman with a simple pitch, If you let me sell lunch plates to your workers, I’ll feed you for free.

He shook her hand, the deal was struck, and Martha officially started her culinary business right out of the back of her minivan.

For nearly two decades, she dedicated herself to feeding the local working crew. Fast forward 16 years, and Martha is still feeding the community, but now, instead of her chasing down construction sites, the crowds are coming straight to her gorgeous new brick-and-mortar eatery at 1896 Airline Drive in Bossier City.

"I started with a dream and a minivan, and now we have a home where the community comes to us." Martha Anchondo

The Award-Winning Taco You Have to Try

All of Martha's hard work officially culminated earlier this year when Taqueria La Reina Del Sur took home the coveted title of Best Taco at Taco Wars 2026.

So, what was the masterpiece that won over the judges? The legendary Campechano Taco.

If you've never had one, campechano is a beloved style of Mexican street food that combines multiple proteins in a single tortilla (the Spanish word campechanear literally translates to "mixing"). Martha’s iconic version features a mouth-watering blend of perfectly grilled, tender beef and rich, spicy chorizo. Folded into a warm tortilla, it is a flavor explosion that proves why she earned those ultimate local bragging rights.

Giant Pizzas, Mega Tortas, and More

While the award-winning taco is a must-order, Martha’s kitchen isn't playing around when it comes to their other massive, viral-worthy creations. If you're bringing a crowd, you have to look at these showstoppers:

The Birria Pizza: A massive, cheesy, crispy creation loaded with tender stewed beef and served with rich consommé for dipping. It is practically built for sharing.

The Mega Torta: A giant, over-the-top Mexican sandwich so incredibly loaded with meats and toppings that it is easily capable of feeding a party of four.

Whether you are stopping in for a quick lunch of champion-level street tacos or bringing the whole family to tackle a giant birria pizza, Martha's tenacious spirit and incredible flavors shine through in every single bite.

Pop in and congratulate the Queen yourself at her new location, and let's keep supporting the local dreams that make our food scene so special!
