Alex Jones’ Infowars Sold At Auction, May Leave Texas
In order to pay over $470 million to the families of the Sandy Hook Massacre, Alex Jones and his Infowars company have been forced to auction off their assets. This includes the rights to the brand name, website, social media accounts, video archive, and studios in Austin, Texas.
All of those elements have now been sold in auction to the satire website The Onion.
The Onion is based in Chicago, and may look to move all of the Infowars assets to Illinois as a way to fold it into their existing brand. However that hasn't been made clear yet.
This purchase comes as a shock to many, for a multitude of reasons. Some never thought The Onion would have the money to pull off something like this. Others were under the belief that the suggestion they would pursue the brand as nothing more than one of the satirical jokes. However it turns out this was totally real.
The CEO of The Onion's parent company, Ben Collins, told the New York Times that they plan to relaunch the site as a meta-satire, mocking the previous brand. They intent do have it supported by "real advertising".
Jones had previously attempted to gather support from viewers and listeners to try and buy the brand at auction, but that obviously failed.
