Fauci On School’s COVID Closures “The Worst Thing You Could Do”

For most of the Summer, Dr. Anthony Fauci and other leading disease experts had been urging schools to get kids back into schools as soon as possible. Most schools and universities listened, at least partially, to Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. However recent moves to shut down schools, especially on college campuses, has Fauci sounding another warning.

While making an appearance on NBC's Today this week, Dr. Fauci took aim at colleges who are shutting down and sending students home when COVID-19 cases emerge.

When asked about what college campuses are doing with shutdowns, Dr. Fauci said:

"It's the worst thing you could do"

Dr. Fauci says colleges need to keep students who test positive sequestered and quarantined, away from other students, but they should not be shutting down or sending kids home.

What Dr. Fauci is prescribing to colleges and universities is similar to what the CDC and Louisiana Department of Health has been instructing for businesses. Which is why most businesses do not completely shutdown when an employee tests positive. That employee generally goes through the testing and quarantine protocol, but can return to work in a matter of days based on testing and symptoms, according to the most recent update on the guidelines. Which seem like they may be appropriate for colleges as well.
