In a report on KTBS, some residents express concern that this could result in increased crime in those neighborhoods. The proposed change calls for “off premises” consumption of alcohol. Folks would not be allowed to hang out and consumer the beverages.
Family Dollar has been introducing alcohol in its stores across the nation. This plan began back in 2019. The company is hoping to sell alcohol in nearly 1,000 stores across the country. The company released this statement:
The Company plans to add adult beverage product in approximately 1,000 Family Dollar stores and expand freezers and coolers in approximately 400 Family Dollar stores in fiscal 2019. In the first quarter, adult beverage product was added to approximately 45 stores and freezers and coolers were expanded in approximately 55 stores.
Employees will have to be fully trained on checking ID’s of customers. They will also have to get ABO cards in order to sell alcohol. The company will also be sure the stores have handheld scanners to verify IDs. The ordinance before the council would limit the floor space for the sale of alcohol to no more than 1.5% of the total interior square footage.
The store on Airline Drive has not petitioned for alcohol sales.
