SHREVEPORT, LA – I don’t buy eggs very often, but I was thinking about making deviled eggs for a Super Bowl party. But that’s not happening, now. That changed after I checked egg prices.
You are paying record high prices for eggs right now. TradingEconomics tracks the prices of eggs and other commodities and things don’t look good for egg lovers. The nationwide price for a dozen eggs has now topped the $7 dollar mark at $7.09.
What Were Egg Prices in 2024?
Last spring, the average price of for a dozen eggs dropped to a low of $1.54 a dozen. But prices have been climbing since then. Prices spiked in September to $4.42. Prices dipped to $2.11 in October and then started going back up.
Prices are still moving up. We were paying about $4 a dozen in December and close to $6 dollars a dozen in January. Keep in mind these are nationwide averages. Things do look a little better in Shreveport Bossier.

Bird flu has forced farmers to kill millions of chickens each month and this is causing the dramatic price hike. It’s also resulting in a shortage of eggs in some grocery stores around the country.
One the bird flu is found on a poultry farm, the entire flock is slaughtered to help limit the virus' spread.
