Does Louisiana Have too Many Silly Boards?
A new legislative audit report shows Louisiana has trimmed the total number of boards and commissions, but we are actually spending more money.
The Shreveport Times reports we are spending $300,000 more on commissions even though we have cut out 5 boards and 12 others are inactive.
We have a total of 472 boards or commissions operating. Some of these are critical. We need things like Port Commissions, the Gaming Control Board and a Tax Commission, just to name a few.
But do we really need the Advisory Committee on Polysomnography, the Aquatic Chelonian Research Board, Board of Examiners for Shorthand Reporters, the Boil Weevil Eradication Commission, Bunches Bend Protection Board, a Crab Task Force, Egg Commission, Fur Advisory Commission, Oyster Task Force, Shrimp Task Force, Crawfish Promotion Board, Kenner Naval Museum Commission, Oil Spill Interagency Council, Public Oyster Seed Ground Vessel Permit Appeals Board, Rice Promotions Board, Rice Research Board, Squirrel Run Levee and Drainage District, State as a Model Employer Task Force, Strawberry Marketing Board, Sweet Potato Development Commission, Work Out Now Legislative Commission and many many others.
